I am deeply saddened to inform you that Dr. Robert (Bob) D. Dryden passed
away yesterday. He was sitting in his chair, with his wife, Jean, next to
him in their house in Blacksburg, Virginia, when he suddenly died. He had
suffered a heart attack about two weeks ago but was recuperating and
feeling well after the surgery.
Bob Dryden has been a professor in our department since 2008. He was the
Dean of Engineering for about 13 years before then. Prior to it he was the
Chairman of the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at Virginia
Tech (VPI&SU). It was during Dr. Dryden’s deanship that the Portland State
University School of Engineering became the Maseeh College of Engineering
and Computer Science, and the Engineering Management Program became the
Department of Engineering and Technology Management. While serving as the
Dean of Maseeh College, Dr. Dryden also had the dual responsibility as the
Vice Chancellor for Engineering for the Oregon University System for
several years. The Dryden Drop Tower for aerospace research in the atrium
of our Engineering Building is named after him.
Dr. Dryden’s funeral date has not been determined yet. He is survived by
his wife Jean, son Bobby in Lubbock, Texas, daughter Julie in Blacksburg,
Virginia and grandchildren.
